It's common for agency and freelance design to be perceived as more attractive or "sexier" than in-house design, but it's time to dispel those myths. Join us for a panel discussion with notable in-house, agency, and freelance designers from the community, where we'll talk about the differences between the three design practices and what it's really like to work in house.
Panel speakers will include:
- Jereme Clymer from PF Chang’s
- Marissa Groom from Heard Museum
- Niki Blaker from LaneTerralever
- Paul Dunbar from MM Brand Agency
- Melissa Balkon from Strong Design Studios
- Robert Renteria from Bobee Design

These days, more and more print designers are branching out into web design to broaden their professional horizons. But, it's never easy just to wade into the deep end of the web pool without some footing first. In this workshop we'll cover some of the challenges you'll encounter in your transition from print to web.
We’ll start with a brief intro to give you an overview of current website best practices and the technologies we’re using. You’ll leave with an understanding of how web pages are built, and how it affects your design for CSS, HTML5, SVG, mobile-first, web image formats, and more. Next we'll cover the 5 things you need to know about designing for the web, including:
- Hosted Fonts (designing and building with hosted fonts)
- Best methods for designing for different device sizes (including HiDPI [retina] devices)
- Designing to a grid (why and best practices in Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Illustrator CC)
- How to export/save optimized content for the web — how to get optimized assets out of Photoshop CC & Illustrator CC
- Working with SVG and icon fonts
Taught by Chana Messer.
The 22nd Annual HandsOn Greater Phoenix Serve-A-Thon will bring together over 1,500 volunteers for one day of hands-on community service projects across the Valley. Over 20 projects will be completed, and as part of Phoenix Urban Design Week, AIGA Arizona is partnering with Design RePublic and Chicanos por la Causa to lend a hand with a special design project.
Come get your hands dirty and help us revitalize an empty lot that will soon be home to maker spaces on Van Buren. We'll welcome them to the neighborhood by creating street stencils, a typographic fence mural, and a community seating area.
Kids ages 12 and up are welcome, and there will be on-site activities for younger children. Each participant will get a free t-shirt, snacks, and water to fuel them throughout the morning. Want to help plan the typographic mural we'll be painting? FIND OUT MORE HERE >
