Gain a better understanding of both historical and contemporary letterforms, while deepening your appreciation for the evolution of the western alphabet in this intensive hands-on workshop. You'll never look at letters the same way again.
Professor Alison King will guide a dedicated class of 20 students through the art of beautiful writing—boot camp style! In this two-night hands-on workshop, you’ll build up muscle memory while learning five different calligraphy styles that will take your lettering skills to the next level. You’ll emerge with a better understanding of both historical and contemporary letterforms, deepening your appreciation for the evolution of the western alphabet.
Class fee includes two 3.5 hour workshop sessions and all the tools you’ll need, including pens, brushes, paper and ink. Kits will be distributed on the first night.
Session 1: Sunday October 1, 1-3:30 pm The first afternoon of Boot Camp will introduce your new toolkit while learning Uncial and Blackletter style calligraphy with a Pilot Parallel Pen.
Session 2: Monday October 16, 6-9:30 pm The second evening session explores Brush Script, Modern Cursive with dip pen, and a homemade Folded Pen.
This workshop is designed for beginners with little to no formal experience with calligraphy. Intermediate and self-taught artists looking to expand their repertoire are also welcome to attend.

About the Instructor Alison King is Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Grand Canyon University, where she teaches graphic design, advertising and history. When she’s not teaching, Alison is the entrepreneur behind Ligature LLC, a consultancy for creative arts and letters, and Modern Phoenix LLC, the valley’s go-to source for inspiration and tourism of local midcentury modern design.
